He graduated and received his doctorate in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Barcelona, with the final grade of outstanding. He has worked as a surgeon in the Cardiac Surgery unit of the London Hospital, as an assistant doctor of the Cardiovascular Surgery unit of the Clinical Hospital of Valencia, as head of the Cardiovascular Surgery unit of the San Rafael Hospital in Barcelona and as a coordinating director of the SEU of Badalona – Santa Coloma – San Adrián. He is chief director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Pathology of the Polyclinic of Barcelona and head of the Cardiovascular Unit of the Medical Center of Marina d'Or, in Oropesa del Mar, Castellón.

In his thank-you speech, Cubells thanked his mentors for teaching him and his family for their support: "Without their help, I wouldn't be here now." In addition, he remembered "all those who are and have been" his patients, thanking them for the trust they placed in him. "This award is the icing on the cake for an entire career," he said.
