Dr. José Manuel Valle Folgueral is a Spanish doctor with a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Cantabria and Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital in Santander, Spain, where he began his career as part of the Cardiovascular Surgery service.
He completed his training via MIR, as a specialist in Neurosurgery, at the San Marcos University Hospital in Braga (Portugal) attached to the Faculty of Medicine of the University do Minho (2002-2008). During his training as Resident Physician, he completed the European Society of Neurosurgery (EANS) courses in Luxembourg, Prague, Lisbon and Rome. His international training is completed with numerous stays in Sao Paulo, Brazil; Helsinki, Finland and at the Hospital of the University of California (UCSF) in San Francisco, USA.
Doctor Valle Folgueral has completed numerous theoretical and practical courses, as well as national and international stays to update knowledge in neurosurgical services. He is a specialist in minimally invasive spine surgery and an expert in spinal stenosis, cervical disc herniation, lumbar disc herniation and trigeminal neuralgia.
Nowadays, he is in charge of the Complex Spine Pathology Unit at the San Juan de Dios Hospital in León, first center in Spain to incorporate the LOOP-X intraoperative robotic CT and the Curve 2.0 intraoperative navigation equipment into its operating rooms, which allows a large number of highly complex surgeries to be carried out with greater precision and less surgical risk for the patient. The doctor was the first neurosurgeon in the world to carry out complex spine surgery with this new technology, which allows specialists to see the area they are operating on in real time, providing greater safety and precision. During the past year, more than 200 patients have benefited from guided spine surgery with the LOOP-X intraoperative robotic CT.
Furthermore, the neurosurgeon is the coordinator and organizer of the symposiums on complex pathology of the spine at the San Juan de Dios Hospital and is the author and co-author of numerous international publications in journals of his specialty, as well as communications in different forums and Neurosurgery congresses.
