He is one of the leading experts worldwide investigating the impact of environmental stressors on cardiovascular health.

Thomas Münzel MD, is Chief of the Department of Cardiology at the University Medical Center, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Germany. He is an interventionalist and also a vascular biologist and got his postdoc training as a vascular biologist at the Institute of Applied Physiology, Professor Eberhard Bassenge, Albert Ludwigs University Freiburg, and in the Laboratories of David G Harrison, Emory University, Atlanta, GA, USA with focus on endothelial function and oxidative stress.

He is a co-initiator of the Gutenberg Health Study, one of the largest prospective cohort trials worldwide, focussing on cardiovascular disease. He is also the founding director of the Center for Thrombosis and Hemostasis, CTH in Mainz, being supported by the Ministry of Science with 43 Million € for ten years.

Since 2011, his research group has been focusing on environmental risk factors for cardiovascular disease with a focus on aircraft noise and air pollution.

As a researcher, Prof Dr Thomas Münzel from the University of Mainz ranks among the top German doctors listed in the prestigious Focus magazine rating within the last 10 years. He is also among the most cited researchers worldwide and thus among the most influential experts in their field of research. Last year, 6,938 people from 69 countries worldwide made it into the ranking.

He pays special attention is on risk factors for cardiovascular health and in particular addresses risk factors that are so ubiquitous that their adverse effects are often suppressed or neglected. For example, fine particulate matter, which according to the latest data, is a major killer of Europeans because of causing cardiovascular disease and is also an essential co-factor in relation to mortality from COVID.

Clinically, his focus is on diagnosis and therapy, particularly in the interventional treatment of stable coronary artery disease and acute myocardial infarction. Other focus areas include diagnosing and treating heart failure, arterial hypertension, and anticoagulation of patients with atrial fibrillation.

He is a member of the European Society of Cardiology, American Heart Association (AHA), German Society of Cardiology, and German Society of Internal Medicine, and a member of the Steering Committees of various studies in his specialty. He is also a reviewer of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and a well-known cardiologist within and outside his country.
