Dr Valeria Gianfreda, surgeon and Chief of the Coloproctogical and Pelvic Floor Disease Unit

Dr Valeria Gianfreda obtained her Bachelor in Medicine and Surgery at the University La Sapienza of Rome in 2000. After achieving this milestone, she started her specialization acquiring the speciality in Digestive Surgery and Surgical Digestive endoscopy in 2005. Being interested in complementing her medical formation, she started her doctorate in Advanced Technologies in Surgery, acquiring this title from the same university in 2008. She specialized in France in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, in Toulouse, for 2 years in a Digestive Surgery Unit.  She later continued her academic studies with specific formation about Specialized Surgical Technics in Coloproctology and Pelvic Floor Pathologies collaborating with DR. Antonio Longo at the St Elisabeth Hospital of Vienna.

Since she obtained her speciality , she managed to maintain important positions simultaneously, demonstrating a great commitment and vocation. She has been Chairman of the Coloproctogical and Pelvic Floor Pathologies Surgical Unit since 2006 at the Public Hospital M.G. Vannini in Rome, a role she still maintains. In addition to this, she has collaborated with several medical entities, such as the Quisisana Clinic and UPMC Salvator Mundi International Hospital in Rome for several years.  In 2019 she started a collaboration with Aventino Medical Group, an international  top-notch medical center dedicated in providing the highest quality healthcare with a multidisciplinary approach involving international specialists.

Her interest in both investigating and also practising medicine has also led her to hear the appealing of teaching. She has been professor in the University La Sapienza of Rome, imparting classes of the Postgraduate Course in Feminine Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery between 2017 and 2024, and also being teacher of Master Imaging Pelvic Floor from 2022 to 2024.  She was also teacher of the Master in Coloproctology and Non-Neoplasic Coloproctogical Pathology at the University Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Rome between 2017 and 2019.

Nowadays, she stands out as a recognized and skilled expert, with a great prowess in many subspecialties. She usually treats proctology-related conditions, such as haemorrhoids, internal and external rectal prolapses, perianal abscess and complex fistulas, inflammatory pathologies of the colon and many other problems. She also performs many interventions treating severe feminine pelvic conditions with high epidemiological impact and with severe influence on quality of life, such as urinary and fecal incontinence, obstructed defecation syndrome and constipation, uterine and vaginal prolapses, or bladder prolapse and also complex multi-compartimental pelvic organ prolapses, performing multiple mininvasive transanal and laparoscopic surgical technics for the complete cure of the three compartmental pelvic floor pathologies with an innovative multidisciplinary approach in order to preserve women’s anatomy and uterus.
