Chrysostomos Dimitriou, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon
Mr Chrysostomos Dimitriou is a Multi-Award-Winning, Substantive Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, specialising in Modern Cataract Surgery and Glaucoma Therapy, as well as all General Eye Conditions. He is the Lead Clinician for Cataract and Glaucoma at the OAKS Hospital and the Colchester Eye Centre of East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust. He has performed in excess of 12,000 Cataract Operations and 3,000 of MiGS procedures (minimally invasive glaucoma surgery) and is currently recognised as the eye surgeon with the highest number of MiGS procedures in the whole of the United Kingdom to include SLT Laser, Micro-Pulse Laser, XEN45, iStent inject, KDB, PRESERFLO, HYDRUS, OMNI and iTRACK Advance Canaloplasties, TrabEx+ irrigational goniectomy, MINIject, MiMS, and Excimer Laser Trabeculostomy ELiOS. He was the first surgeon in the UK to implant the novel MINIject-1.3 device, use Gonioready and minimally invasive micro-sclerostomy, while being the first surgeon in the world to implant the MINIject-S device.
Mr Dimitriou is a medical professional with over two decades of experience in the field of ophthalmology. He is a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, British Medical Association, Hellenic Medical Society, the European Board of Ophthalmologists, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, among many other professional societies. He was the first person to succeed in the Pan-European Glaucoma Fellowship exam, being awarded by the European Glaucoma Society in 2015. Having a keen interest in medical education, Mr Dimitriou obtained in 2020 a post-graduate certificate in Medical and Healthcare Education from the Anglia Ruskin University. He has also been a Tutor at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists since 2019, while leading Simulation in Ocular Surgery at Health Education in the East of England since 2021.
Mr Dimitriou serves as Principal Investigator for major Glaucoma Research Studies, including the National East Anglian POEM Study, International XEN45 in Angle Closure Multi-Centre Study, Pan-European MASTERS CyPass Study, TRITON, ARTEMIS, ATHENA Bimatoprost Slow-Release implant Trials, STAR V, STAR VI and STAR LiFE Trials for MINIject Supraciliary Glaucoma Implants. He also serves as Honorary Member of the Board of Directors of the ICENI Surgical Simulation Centre. He leads the Faculty of Ophthalmology and is also Founder, Organiser and Chair of the annual iGLEAMS MiGS Symposium utilising NGENUITY 3D medical education.
Mr Dimitriou was awarded Level 2 Clinical Excellence Award in 2019 for his actions to bring new treatment modalities to everyday clinical practice for the benefit of his cataract and glaucoma Patients. He has also been presented with the 2023 Rob Brierly Educational Award as the Top Medical Trainer for ESNEFT in acknowledgement of his tireless efforts to educate and support the next generation of Ophthalmologists and Eye Surgeons in the East of England and beyond.
