Dr Rafael Llombart y Ais, born in 1953 into a family with a long tradition in the health sector, has distinguished himself as a prominent figure in traumatology and orthopaedic surgery. Graduating in Medicine and Surgery in 1977 from the University of Valencia, he furthered his specialization in Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology at the General Hospital of Valencia and the University Clinic of Navarra, earning his doctorate "Cum Laude" in 1986. Recognized with the National Research Award in 1987 and named Doctor Honoris Causa by two foreign universities, he has completed professional stays at various centres in the United States and Europe.
Llombart has combined his medical practice with an intense teaching career. He began as a professor at the University of Valencia and the University of Navarra, and more recently at the Catholic University of Valencia. His influence has been crucial in the training of future doctors, physiotherapists, and nurses.
In the field of hospital management, Llombart has demonstrated notable leadership abilities. After completing a Master's in Healthcare Management and Administration in Barcelona, he directed the Llombart Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Surgery in Valencia since 1991, and served as director of the Quirón Hospital in Valencia for 15 years. Additionally, he led the Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology Service of the Valencian Oncology Institute Foundation and directed the Medical Services of Midat-Copa Work Accident Mutual for 25 years.
Llombart has also had a significant impact in the sports sector. He was head of the medical services of the Valencia CF football team, collaborated with the Banesto cycling team, and served as medical director of the medical services of the Footballers' Mutual Society of Valencia. For 25 years, he collaborated with the Iber, Mar-Valencia, Osito la Eliana Women's Handball Club, significantly contributing to the care and recovery of the players, resulting in multiple national and international titles.
Committed to international research and education, he has chaired scientific conferences, published books and papers, and has been a member of numerous scientific societies. Additionally, he has dedicated his life to international cooperation, participating in medical missions in various countries, providing him with valuable human experiences and the opportunity to contribute to global well-being.
