Internationally recognised for developing minimally invasive techniques in foot and ankle surgery

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon David Redfern treats the full spectrum of foot and ankle disorders, including bunions and forefoot problems, arthritis of the foot and ankle, sports injuries and trauma. He has a world-wide reputation for developing minimally invasive and less invasive techniques in these areas and in particular with regards to bunion surgery and the treatment of complex forefoot and hind foot problems.

He regularly lectures nationally and internationally, and has trained hundreds of surgeons worldwide in minimally invasive techniques. He has introduced these techniques to Australia and more recently the USA as well as many European Countries. He has trained more than 500 surgeons worldwide in these techniques and has regular visitations in London from surgeons internationally.

Mr Redfern graduated from the University of London in 1993 and continued his postgraduate training in London and Cambridge where he also taught medical students at Cambridge University. He completed fellowships at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA and the Avon Orthopaedic Unit, Bristol. He completed his higher surgical training at St George’s Hospital in London and was then appointed as consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals in 2004.

Mr Redfern now works exclusively in the private sector. His practice is based in several key London hospitals including the Lister Hospital, the Hospital of John & St Elizabeth and the Montefiore Hospital.

He has published extensively internationally on foot and ankle surgery and has served on council of both the British Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (BOFAS) and the European Foot & Ankle Society (EFAS) where he also served as chair of the Scientific Committee. He is also faculty for the Minimally Invasive Foot & Ankle Society (MIFAS). He is a reviewer for several major international journals including the Bone and Joint Journal, Foot & Ankle International, and Foot & Ankle Surgery.

Mr Redfern treats patients from all over the world, with clinics based in both London and Sussex. He has developed a specialised service for the treatment of foot and ankle patients using state of the art minimally invasive surgery techniques.

He treats patients with all types of foot and ankle problems from bunions to arthritis, sports injuries and trauma, including Olympic gold-medallist athletes and a wide range of professional sports people.

Mr Redfern and his French collaborator have worked with industry to develop and refine numerous minimally invasive surgical techniques over the last 10 years which have now been used in more than 50,000 procedures across the world. Their minimally invasive surgery techniques have been shown to dramatically reduce pain after surgery compared to traditional open techniques.

Mr Redfern explains, “patients are increasingly seeking out these minimally invasive state-of-the-art modern techniques and research has shown them to be both reliable and less painful than traditional open surgery. I have been privileged to travel the world lecturing and teaching surgeons in these techniques and enjoy regularly hosting visiting surgeons in London. I remain fascinated by my field of medicine and hope to be able to continue to push the boundaries of modern surgery.”
