A leading figure in international family law
James Stewart
James Stewart, a partner at Penningtons Manches Cooper and co-head of the Private Wealth sector, has redefined the practice of international family law with a rare blend of technical rigor, empathy, and strategic vision.
With nearly three decades of experience in London and dual qualification in England and Wales as well as Northern Ireland, Stewart has established himself as a benchmark in highly complex financial cases and multi-jurisdictional disputes. He is not only respected by his peers but also deeply valued by his clients, thanks to his interpersonal skills even in the most challenging situations.
As a specialist in high-net-worth cases, Stewart has represented both private clients and family offices in cross-border disputes involving fiduciary structures, corporate entities, and multimillion-pound estates. Among his standout cases are the landmark Clibbery v Allan — the only family law case to reach the Court of Appeal on privacy and media coverage — and several high-profile divorces involving celebrities from the entertainment industry.
In 2002 Stewart was appointed a Visiting Professor at the University of Ulster. He is also a family law arbitrator, a collaborative lawyer, and a key figure in the International Academy of Family Lawyers (IAFL), where he has served as Governor and Parliamentarian. Since 2011, he has been the General Editor of the renowned “Blue Book” (Family Law: A Global Guide, Thomson Reuters), considered the definitive comparative guide to family law across 63 jurisdictions. The 6th Edition of the Blue Book was published in 2024 and a 7th Edition will follow in 2026.
Stewart stands out not only for his impressive résumé but for the way he practices law. In his work, creative and early conflict resolution takes precedence over unnecessary litigation, especially when children are involved.
Top-ranked in all the major legal directories, Stewart has been the recipient of numerous awards, including "Family Lawyer of the Year" from Chambers HNW and Citywealth, and is named in the Legal 500 Hall of Fame. He has been shortlisted in the Family Law Category for the forthcoming European Legal Awards.
His constant presence in publications such as Spear’s Magazine and the Tatler Address Book has made him one of the most visible figures in family law in the United Kingdom.
James also devotes time to education and public causes. He serves on the consultation board for Practical Law co-organizer of the Annual Legal Dinner, one of the highlights of London's legal calendar, which raises funds for the peace building charity, Co-operation Ireland.
